Hermiston High School students upset competition at the Crimson Bot Brawl, hosted by Washington State University, with three victories this past weekend.
Carsin and Haydin Newton are juniors in the engineering program, under the guidance of Mr. Colin Haines. Showing great initiative in the program, the students were highly interested in a combat robotics competition, and using spare parts and electronics from Haines, they built a competition worthy robot.
"Building the bot was great and fixing it between fights was so much fun,” said Carsin Newton. “We came out of one fight looking like an absolute wreck, but no matter how bad things look, a little bit of hard work, solder, and elbow grease will get us up and running!"
In the competition, the Newtons took first place in both the Plastic Antweights and Full Metal Antweights categories, taking out a top ten nationally ranked Plastic Antweight bot and two ranked bots in the Metal Antweight division. The students also earned third place in the competitive Beetleweight division.
“Carsin and Haydin demonstrated precision driving and excellent mechanical and engineering skills to ensure their bots were in top shape throughout a grueling competition,” said Haines. “They competed not just against other kids but against several veteran engineers, some of whom have been featured on the BattleBots TV show.

Los estudiantes de la Preparatoria de Hermiston derrotaron a la competencia en el Crimson Bot Brawl, organizado por la Universidad de Washington State, con tres victorias el fin de semana pasado.
Carsin y Haydin Newton son estudiantes de tercer año en el programa de ingeniería, bajo la dirección del Sr. Colin Haines. Mostrando una gran iniciativa en el programa, los estudiantes estaban muy interesados en una competencia de robótica de combate, usando partes de repuesto de Haines, para construir un robot digno de competencia.
“Construir el robot fue genial y arreglarlo entre peleas/la competencia fue muy divertido,” dijo Carsin Newton. "Salimos de una pelea luciendo como un desastre absoluto, pero no importa lo mal que se veían las cosas, con un poco de trabajo duro, soldadura ¡y gran esfuerzo nos permitió levantarnos!"
En la competencia, los Newton obtuvieron el primer lugar en las categorías Plastic Antweights y Full Metal Antweights, eliminando a uno de los diez mejores robots Plastic Antweight clasificados a nivel nacional y dos robots clasificados en la división Metal Antweight. Los estudiantes también obtuvieron el tercer lugar en la competitiva división Beetleweight.
"Carsin y Haydin demostraron una conducción precisa y excelentes habilidades mecánicas y de ingeniería para garantizar que sus robots estuvieran en plena forma durante una competencia agotadora," dijo Haines. “Compitieron no sólo contra otros estudiantes sino también contra varios ingenieros veteranos, algunos de los cuales han aparecido en el programa de televisión BattleBots.
