Hello to our Hermiston School District Families!
This letter serves as an update to changes for HSD students for the remainder of this school year and provides information on our evolving K5 Distance Learning Model.
Our first update is this: April 8, 2020 @ 1:00 pm, Governor Kate Brown announced that schools will remain closed in the State of Oregon for this school year.
The best announcement that I have is that beginning March 30, 2020, ALL elementary teachers in Hermiston have been trying to reach you! Please check your email, text messages, Remind 101 App, phone messages, mailbox and other avenues that teachers generally use to communicate with you. If a connection has not been made, please call your child’s school or email their teacher using this format [email protected] - it is important that a connection is made with each teacher and family!
Beginning April 13, 2020, Distance Learning for ALL will begin in Hermiston School District.
What is Distance Learning? This is learning provided through direct instruction and learning activities, in which the student and instructor are in different locations. Students engaging in distance learning have access to appropriate educational materials, learning activities and receive ongoing interaction with their teacher.
How will it be received? Distance learning includes multimedia communication and blended learning strategies, not just digital/online learning. A combination of online and printed materials will be available to accommodate families and provide equitable instruction.
How do teachers support their students? Teachers and counselors are just a phone call, email or virtual meeting away. All teachers and counselors will be available to answer student questions and provide support during their “office hours” from 9:00am to 2:00pm, Monday through Friday (mirroring the original school year calendar). Your child’s teacher will personally connect with you to ensure that they have the best information and that you have the best access to this support.
This is all very new to our teachers, just as it is for families and students. Over the last three days, your child’s teacher has been learning how to change their teaching style and routines, to fit a new delivery system. As we move through the remainder of the school year, each week will bring a level of improvement from the week before as we all learn together. Reading and Mathematics are our focus from the classroom teacher, however, each PE and Music Teacher have learning activities planned along with the school counselor each week.
An important part of Distance Learning is Teacher-Led Learning (structured, grade-level learning directed by teacher and supported by teacher), and just as important are the Informal & Supplemental Activities that are in addition to Teacher-Led Learning. Many Teacher-Led learning activities may include Informal & Supplemental Activities as extensions. Remember to check the HSD Informal & Supplemental Learning page for ideas to support your child’s learning at home.
Each elementary school will be communicating their Distance Learning for ALL delivery model prior to April 13, 2020. Please check their social media pages and look for communication from the schools - we have been trying to reach you!

Highland Hills Elementary Distance Learning Plan
- HHES distance learning plan reflects Ms. Brownings email and is supported with the below steps.
- Grade level teams have shared their learning platform to all families. Please direct questions to your child’s teacher [email protected]
- Families without internet access at home can pick up their packets at Highland Hills Elementary School every Thursday between 11:00am and 12:30pm.
- Library Books can be turned in on Thursdays at Highland Hills Elementary School every Thursday between 11:00am and 12:30pm.
- We ask when visiting Highland Hills Elementary School that you use the drop off lane and remain in your vehicle. A staff member will come out to support you.

We are creating a link on our school website so we can share pictures we receive from families with their activities. We love seeing your smiling faces. We ask that families post pictures, that you feel comfortable with, of the activities you are involved in during our closure. Pictures can be academic and non-academic. ¡Hola a nuestra Familias del Distrito Escolar de Hermiston!
Esta carta sirve para actualizarlo de los cambios que impactan a los estudiantes de HSD por lo que resta del año escolar y provee información del Modelo de Aprendizaje a Distancia para los del Kínder al 5to grado, el cual sigue evolucionado.
Nuestra primera actualización es esta: El 8 de abril, a la 1 p.m., la Gobernadora Kate Brown anunció que las escuelas permanecerán cerradas en el Estado de Oregon por todo el año escolar.
¡El mejor anuncio que he tenido es que comenzando el 30 de marzo, 2020, TODOS los maestros de las escuelas primarias en Hermiston han tratado de comunicarse con usted! Por favor revise su correo electrónico, mensajes de texto, la aplicación Remind, mensajes en su teléfono, su correo u otros medios que los maestros generalmente usan para comunicarse con usted. Si no han logrado comunicarse con usted, por favor llame a la escuela de su hijo/a o envíe un correo electrónico usando este formato [email protected] – ¡es muy importante que los maestros se conecten con cada familia!
Comenzando el 13 de abril, 2020, Aprendizaje a Distancia para TODOS comenzara en el Distrito de Hermiston.
¿Qué es el Aprendizaje a Distancia? Es el aprendizaje que se provee a través de instrucción directa y actividades de aprendizaje, en el cual el estudiante y el instructor están en diferentes ubicaciones. Los estudiantes que participan en el aprendizaje a distancia tienen acceso a materiales educativos apropiados, actividades de aprendizaje y están en constante comunicación con su maestro.
¿Como se recibirá? El aprendizaje a distancia incluye comunicación usando varios métodos de comunicación y estrategias de aprendizaje combinando, no solo aprendizaje digital/en línea. Es una combinación de materiales en línea e impresos que estarán disponibles para acomodar a las familias y proveer instrucción equitativa.
¿Como apoyarán los maestros a sus estudiantes? Los maestros y consejeros están a una llamada, un correo electrónico o una reunión virtual de distancia. Todos los maestros y consejeros estarán disponibles para contestar las respuestas de los estudiantes y proveer apoyo durante las “horas de oficina” de 9 am a 2 pm, de lunes a viernes, (siguiendo el calendario original del año escolar). El maestro de su hijo personalmente se comunicará con usted para asegurarse que ellos tienen la mejor información y que usted tiene el mejor acceso al apoyo que necesita.
Todo esto es muy nuevo para nuestros maestros, así como lo es para las familias y los estudiantes. Estos últimos tres días, el maestro de su hijo ha estado aprendiendo como hacer el cambio en el estilo de enseñanza y las rutinas, para seguir un nuevo sistema. A medida que avancemos el año escolar, cada semana traerá un nivel de mejoría de la semana previa, mientras vamos aprendiendo juntos. La lectura y las matemáticas será el enfoque del maestro, sin embargo, cada semana, el maestro de educación física y música tendrán actividades de aprendizaje.
Una parte importante del Aprendizaje a Distancia es el Aprendizaje Dirigido por el Maestro (aprendizaje estructurado, a nivel de grado dirigido y apoyado por el maestro), e igual de importante serán las Actividades Informales y Suplementarias que se suman al Aprendizaje Dirigido por el Maestro. Muchas actividades Dirigidas por el Maestro pueden incluir actividades informales y suplementarias como una extensión. Recuerde revisar la página del Aprendizaje Informal y Suplementario para encontrar ideas para apoyar el aprendizaje de su hijo en el hogar.
Cada escuela primaria estará comunicando el modelo que seguirán para proveer Aprendizaje a Distancia para TODOS antes del 13 de abril. Por favor revise sus redes sociales o los sitios en la web y esperen recibir algún tipo de comunicación por parte de las escuelas - ¡hemos tratado de localizarlo!

Plan de Aprendizaje a Distancia de la Primaria Highland Hills
