THE GREAT BODY SHOP Comprehensive Health Instruction: K - 5

THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a comprehensive health education curriculum that is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive and medically accurate. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is aligned to state and national standards for health education, as well as the Healthy People 2020 initiative. It is aligned to the National Education Standards, the National Sexuality Education Standards, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Characteristics of Effective Health Education Curricular and the core concepts recommended by the CDC's HECAT. It is designed primarily for children and their families. Monthly, Student Issues are sent to schools. The Student Issue looks like a health magazine and is used like a periodical or informational text. At the end of the unit, students take the Student Issue home and use it for family activities and discussions.

The goal of a comprehensive Health Education program is to promote healthful living and discourage health-risk behaviors.
 
Erin's Law
In 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin's Law. 
 
Erin's Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools. SB 856 mandates that all Oregon public schools provide:
 
  • A minimum of four instructional sessions (greater than or equal to a standard class period) of sex abuse prevention instruction per year for grades kindergarten through 12.
  • Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards.
  • Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards. 
  • Instruction that is age appropriate, medically accurate, and is not shame- or fear-based.
  • Instruction that is culturally inclusive and responsive to diverse students including race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.
  • A parental involvement component to inform parents about child sexual abuse topics.
  • A professional training component for administrators, teachers and other school personnel.
